A Journey Back from Maha Kumbh: A Lesson in Empathy and Responsibility

It was 2 AM, and our bus was filled with weary yet content passengers returning from the Sahi Snan at Prayagraj. After hours of participating in the spiritual grandeur of the Maha Kumbh Mela, we eagerly anticipated a fulfilling meal. The sacred dip in the holy Sangam had left us with hearts full of devotion, but our empty stomachs craved nourishment. Despite a futile three-hour search, we remained hopeful as the bus finally pulled into a dimly lit roadside dhabha. Unfortunately, our hopes were soon dashed when we learned that the only options available were rice and dal.

Resigned, we boarded the bus once again, ready to endure the remainder of our journey. Some passengers dozed off, while others exchanged stories about their spiritual experiences. I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible energy of the Maha Kumbh Mela, where millions had gathered in unity, seeking spiritual growth and divine blessings.

As I settled into my seat, a nagging concern suddenly crossed my mind. The couple who had been seated behind me seemed to be missing. Initially, I brushed it off, assuming they may have switched seats or found a quieter spot. But as minutes passed, the uneasy feeling grew stronger. What if they had been left behind?

Unable to shake off the thought, I consulted my colleagues to confirm my suspicion. After a quick discussion, we all agreed – the couple was indeed missing. Concerned for their well-being, we knew we had to act immediately. The unsettling image of them stranded in the middle of the night weighed heavily on us.

Without wasting time, we approached the bus conductor and requested that the bus be turned around. To our dismay, the driver bluntly refused. He insisted that we had already traveled 10 kilometers and turning back would cause further delays. His words were practical, but the thought of abandoning two people in the darkness was unimaginable.

Yet, we refused to back down. With unified determination, we reasoned with the driver, emphasizing the importance of empathy and responsibility. What if it had been one of us? The idea of leaving anyone behind, especially after a spiritual pilgrimage, felt deeply wrong. Finally, after much persistence, the driver relented. The bus made a U-turn, retracing its path back to the dhabha.

The moment we arrived, we spotted the couple, their worried expressions illuminated by the faint glow of the roadside lights. The relief and gratitude on their faces were unmistakable. It was a powerful reminder of the profound impact a simple act of kindness can have.

That night, the satisfaction I felt wasn’t just about helping someone in need; it was about the collective spirit we had shown. We had chosen compassion over convenience, proving that even in the most unexpected moments, humanity prevails.

सावन का महीना आते ही, श्रद्धालुओं की भीड़ सुल्तानगंज से देवघर की ओर उमड़ पड़ती है। यह यात्रा सिर्फ एक धार्मिक यात्रा नहीं, बल्कि आस्था, श्रद्धा और साहस की अनूठी गाथा है।

यात्रा का प्रारंभ

सुल्तानगंज, बिहार का एक प्राचीन और पवित्र स्थल, गंगा के तट पर स्थित है। यहां से श्रद्धालु पवित्र गंगाजल को कांवड़ में भरते हैं और देवघर, झारखंड स्थित बाबा बैद्यनाथ धाम की ओर प्रस्थान करते हैं। इस यात्रा की लंबाई लगभग 105 किलोमीटर होती है और इसे पूरा करने में साधारणतः पांच से सात दिन लगते हैं।
